Teachers

Mel Howard
I never planned on being a yoga teacher. In fact, when I took over Twisting Peacock Yoga in 2014, I wasn’t even considering it. At that point, yoga was something I enjoyed, mostly in gyms and the occasional studio class, but it hadn’t yet sunk its teeth into me the way it does when you truly begin to understand its depth. I thought I was simply stepping into a business role, managing a space that brought people together doing something we all loved. But yoga, as it does, had other plans for me.

I remember when I first started visiting yoga studios in my mid 20s, I often felt a little out of place, like I didn’t quite belong. I wasn’t sure if I was “doing it right,” and sometimes the spaces felt exclusive or intimidating. When I took over Twisting Peacock Yoga, one of my biggest aims was to create a studio where everyone felt welcome, regardless of experience, background, or ability. I didn’t want it to feel elitist or unapproachable, I wanted it to feel like your yoga home. Meaning more than just a place to practice yoga, I wanted it to be a space where people could come as they are, be seen, be supported, and feel a sense of belonging.

Six months in, I felt the pull to deepen my practice, not to teach, but just to understand more. I travelled to India in 2015 for a 200-hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training, expecting to gain some insight into the practice. Instead, I fell deeply in love, not just with the movement, but with the philosophy, the way it shifts and shapes the heart and mind. That same year, I completed a 30-hour Yin Yoga training, then a 50-hour Yin Yoga training in 2016. In 2017, I undertook a 200-hour Vinyasa training, refining my understanding of dynamic movement and breath. A big pause followed as life evolved, and in 2024, I returned to a little study with another 50-hour Yin Yoga training diving more into the depths of Chinese Meridian Theory. Solidifying my passion for stillness, introspection, and the softer edges of the practice.

Over the years, my teaching has transformed. In the beginning, I thought I wanted to teach asana, to guide people through movement and breath. But quite quickly, I realised my dharma wasn’t just in the postures, it was in the teachings that free the heart and mind. My practice, once rooted in Vinyasa and Hatha, gradually slowed. Yin yoga became my home. Motherhood deepened this shift, after becoming a mum, my body craved stillness, presence, and nourishment more than ever. I no longer had the energy to burn through dynamic sequences, instead, I needed to replenish, to soften, to hold space for myself. And as my practice changed, so did my teaching. For the last six years, I have primarily taught Yin yoga, weaving philosophy, storytelling, and poetry into each class. I love sharing wisdom from ancient texts, from my own life, from the lessons love & loss have gifted me.

I’ve never followed one guru or one lineage. My greatest teachers have been my relationships with the people in my life, all of which at different times have challenged me, loved me, broken me open, and put me back together. I draw inspiration from life itself, from the messy and beautiful unfolding of it all. My classes are an offering of that, a space to unravel, to breathe, to be still in a world that moves too fast. Whether it’s through a Dharma talk, a passage of poetry, or the deep stillness of a Yin pose, my intention is always the same: to guide people home to themselves. I look forward to meeting you on the mat.

And if you ever see me in the studio, please say hello, introduce yourself, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to stop me for a chat, or send me an email if I am on my way into a class or out the door.

Scott Alfonso
After spending most of most of my working career as a chef, I came to yoga as a “last ditch effort” to get my mind and my body right.

I had spent the better part of a decade managing chronic back pain and my headspace was a kaleidoscope of personal insecurities and false facts.

I began practicing a couple of times a week and resisted every moment.

Every posture, every opportunity for reflection, and every mantra was met with suspicion and reluctance. Yet, somehow, I persevered.

I knew behind all the noise was a resistance to change, a resistance to an alternative story, a fear of stripping away that which I had thought defined me.

Over time my practice become more regular, and I found myself practicing off the mat as well.

Allowing myself room to breath, room reflect, room to simply exist in any given moment.

I decided to take the journey to train a few years ago.

Encouraged by my teachers I surrendered to the experience, explored further depths of the practice and philosophy and found myself with an ever growing appreciation for what this practice has to offer.

I enjoy a strong practice with a gentle interweaving of philosophical reflection.

I seek to help students better understand their bodies as an avenue to better understand their higher selves.

Ingrid is a yoga teacher, sound healer, and Reiki practitioner who has been teaching for almost four years.
Her yoga journey began in 2015, initially attending yoga classes in gyms. From 2020 onwards, her practice deepened beyond asana as she began practising in yoga studios and exploring yoga as a holistic practice — one that supports not only the body but also the mind, emotions and inner life. This deeper understanding of yoga is what truly captured her heart and continues to inform her teaching today.

Sarah Culhane
Teaching yin and restorative yoga, meditation and breathwork at TPY brings an extra special meaning to me – its through this very studio and the incredible teachers that have taught here that I have discovered my passion and love for yoga. As well as teaching here you will find me frequenting the classes regularly. I just adore the community of yogis at TPY and this place feels like my second home.

Like many of us during the height of the stressful pandemic I was given the opportunity to slow down and connect to myself. Feeling stressed and simply put, not the best version of myself. Something deep within me said the way I was living life wasn’t right. It was a loud scream deep within my soul demanding a change of direction, and boy am I glad I listened to the scream. I was seriously burnt out and on a stress loop I just couldn’t get off of. That’s until I stepped into a yin yoga class and overtime and devotion to my yoga practice I discovered the magic of yoga & from that point on, there was no turning back for me. I found the community and practice that connects to my core values of kindness, living healthy, feeling & embracing the best possible version of myself that I can be and cultivating peace into every aspect of my life.

I am so passionate about teaching yoga & mindfulness practices to my students. I really do believe everyone deserves to feel calm and an extra sense of stability & inner sense of self. I believe yoga helps supports us throughout the waves of our busy and unpredictable lives.

In 2024 I went to India the beautiful birthplace of yoga to complete my 200hr Hatha yoga teacher training. In 2025 I am completing my 50hr yin yoga teacher training and level 1 sound healing. A life long commitment to teaching, practicing and learning the art of yoga unfolds for me. Yoga is a way of life for me now and I simply can’t wait to teach and guide you through a calming yoga class soon yogis.

Ruby Clohessy
My yoga journey started at 17 when a friend invited me to join her for a free yoga class at Lululemon one Sunday morning. I fell in love immediately and have had an almost daily practice ever since.
Fast forward eight years, right before Covid I signed up to do my 200 hour yoga teacher training, with the intention to learn more yoga philosophy and deepen my own practice. I was working full time in corporate and studying every evening and weekend during lockdown. Shortly after that I completed my 350 hours and then took a gap year to study at an ashram and gain some experience teaching.
During my time at the ashram we delved deep into pranayama, yoga, Vedic philosophy & Ayurveda which I love weaving into classes and workshops. I also taught my first yoga classes and workshops there.
Now a full time yoga teacher I aim to empower students with tools and techniques to regulate their nervous system, reduce stress, promote balance in the body and improve all aspects of their health.
I especially love teaching pranayama, kriyas, mobility, tiered & strong vinyasas and functional yin yoga.

Laurén Roberts
After spending much of my working life in the fast-paced corporate world, I came to Yin Yoga without realising it was what I had been missing. For years I lived in a constant state of doing, focused on productivity, structure and external success. My lifestyle was very yang, and I didn’t yet understand how deeply I needed balance. When I found Yin during COVID, the stillness felt unfamiliar and, at times, uncomfortable. Slowing down meant actually sitting with myself. But beneath that discomfort was something powerful. Yin became a space where I could soften, listen and reconnect. Over time, the practice moved beyond the mat. I began responding rather than reacting, allowing rather than forcing.
I completed my 200-hour teacher training in 2022 and have since continued my studies in Yin Yoga, sound healing, Reiki and MyoYin. Each layer has deepened my understanding of the body, energy and the nervous system.
My classes are grounding, reflective and intentionally paced. I value stillness, subtlety and creating a space where students feel supported to slow down and reconnect, sometimes discovering something they didn’t even realise they were missing.
I look forward to welcoming you to the mat.
